PETER MATTEI -
Peter joined the Science IP team as a Senior Searcher in November
2007. Prior to joining CAS, he worked at Bristol-Myers
Squibb in their Information and Knowledge Integration group where
he supported R&D by providing patent and scientific
information in the areas of chemistry and pharmaceuticals.
Together with his time at the DuPont Pharmaceutical
Company, Peter has over 15 years of experience in searching and
support ing scientific and chemical information within the
pharmaceutical industry.
Upon obtaining a MS degree in Organic Chemistry from
Temple University, Peter worked as a synthetic chemist at the Fox
Chase Cancer Center where he made a variety compounds including
radioisotope labeled materials. Contrasting his experience
at Fox Chase, he then took a position as a process chemist at
Sybron Chemicals where he researched industrial scale
Friedel-Crafts alkylations, sulfonation reactions and polymer
chemistry. While his interests eventually returned him to
pha rmaceutical research, Peter recalls some unique experiences
at Sybron like handling sulfur trioxide and running an alkylation
on a 2000 gallon scale. When offered a position with the
pharmaceuticals division of the DuPont company in 1984, Peter
resumed organic synthesis in medicinal chemistry and worked on
the discovery of new central nervous system agents. During
his 18 years with DuPont, he became interested in the
then-emerging technology of computer-based chemical and
scientific info rmation and subsequently began a new career in
this area.
Still a chemist at heart, Peter has taught various
chemistry courses as an adjunct professor for over 20 years and,
aside from his love of teaching, this activity provides some
opportunities for a little ‘hands on’ chemistry.
Peter has been a member of the American Chemical Society
for 24 years (Chemical Information Division and local section)
and is also a member of the Patent Information Users Group
(PIUG).
